It would appear that latest and most prestigious in house fashion accessory for the home is the Flat Screen TV. The decision has to be what sort of Flat Screen TV to get?

Of the many choices it really boils down to two really, Plasma or Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) for your Flat Screen TV?

So how would you describe Digital TV and how would you describe a Flat Screen TV? Well the short answer is that phraseology is mixed here and quite often people get confused, LCD, TFT and Plasma are all terms that get bandied around yet they don?t all mean the same thing.

In a nutshell Flat Screen TV?s can either be Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) sets or can be Plasma screen but the two are different. One of the major differences between the two technologies probably lies in the fact that with LCD TV?s because the main technology used is TFT (Thin Film Transistor) by and large the screens are able to be much more energy efficient and potentially much smaller and more mobile.

So lets get down to basics and start looking at individual TV?s.

The first LCD TV that we recommend that you take a look at here is the Sagem Axium HD-L27

The HD-L27 is a 27in LCD TV and shop around and you can find these TV’s in the region of 1000 pounds sterling or 2000 US dollars. The resolution of the screen is 1280 x 768 and with regards to being HD ready the answer is yes. The Sagem Axium has 3 (2 RGB) scarts and and the type and number of multimedia interfaces the the Sagem Axium HD-L27 uses are DVI and 1. The type of tuner for this TV is Analogue and the HD-L27 is available from limited outlets only.

So to take an initial view how would we rate HD-L27?

Well it is a TV after all and as such the logical place to start would be the picture and our score here would be 8 out of 10 next we would look at the sound quality and our view of this would be 6 out of 10 With regards to the availability and number of relevant connections, our score would be 10 out of 10 As far as overall features are concerned we would give it 8 out of 10 and for ease of use and overall value for money we would give the 8 and 8 out of 10 respectively.

Taking everything into consideration our overall view of the package would be this is a solid enough Flat screen TV that comes HD ready and is great value for money. With a performance that would put to shame most of the more expensive offerings we get to play with, this TV from perhaps one of the less well known providers around gets our nod in the value for money and performance stakes. Definitely one not to be ashamed to be caught watching when the neighbours call round at Christmas!

The first LCD TV that we recommend that you take a look at here is the Samsung LE-26R41BD

The LE-26R41BD is a 26in LCD TV and currently these TV’s can be found for 600 pounds sterling or 1200 US dollars. The resolution of the screen is 1366 X 768 and with regards to being HD ready the answer is no. The Samsung has 2 (1 RGB) scarts and and the type and number of multimedia interfaces the the Samsung LE-26R41BD uses are none at all. The type of tuner for this TV is Analogue and Digital and the LE-26R41BD is available from limited outlets only.

So what would we think is a fair assessment of the LE-26R41BD?

The most obvious place to start with as far as TV’s are concerned would be the picture quality and our score here would be 10 out of 10 as the other half of the “Sound and Vision” double act our opinion of the sound quality would be 8 out of 10 Another useful aspect to review is the availability and number of relevant connections and our score here would be 8 out of 10 Overall with regards to the actual “featureability” of the set our score would be 10 out of 10 and for ease of use and overall value for money we would give the 8 and 10 out of 10 respectively.

Taking everything into consideration our overall view of the package would be within reason this TV is as future proof as you can get (for the money). This means that it is also extremely good value for money with also a great performance all round but above and beyond everything else as they say “the price is right”.

Remember that all the prices we use in these reviews are very much designed for illustration purposes only and in some cases you may well find the actual price cheaper but also in some cases, more expensive.

Picking the right sized Big Screen TV for your needs can’t be boiled down to a simple formula. There are many things to consider before you’re ready to make a purchase.

How large is the space in your living room where the flat screen TV will go? Is there room around the TV for ventilation and Dolby Surround Sound speakers? How much do you want to spend? How far away will the viewers be sitting?

You’ll also want to know if a Home Theater System fit in the room. Would you have more space if you install a wall mount instead of a TV stand? Do you want to buy a discount or high end Big Screen TV? And most importantly, how jealous will the neighbors will be?

• Measure the space where you plan to install the TV. Subtract one foot from the resulting measurement to allow for the frame and ventilation space. This will give you a rough idea of what sized Plasma TV will fit in the space (a five foot long space is needed for a 50” TV).

• Big Screen TV screens are measured diagonally like all TV screens. The most popular screen sizes are 42-inch and 50-inch, although many sizes are available between 32-inch and 108-inch. Because TV screens are measured diagonally; a 50” screen will have a horizontal measurement somewhat shorter than 50”.

• How high on the wall should your Plasma TV be mounted? A flat wall mount should be slightly above the viewer’s eye level. The bottom of the screen should be no more than one foot higher than the eye level of a seated adult. A tilt mount can be installed much higher than that, over fireplaces and even on bedroom ceilings.

• A careful shopper can find a name brand 42-inch HDTV Flat Screen for around $1,000, and a 50-inch for about $2,000. You can spend much more, but the price of Plasma, LCD and DLP TVs has dropped significantly in recent months.

(If you’re not familiar with some of the terms used above: HDTV, Plasma, LCD and DLP, you should Google the “123 Guide To Plasma TV.com”)

• A wall mount takes up much less space than a TV stand. Flat Screen TVs are less than 4 inches thick, a flat wall mount adds 2 inches and a tilt mount 4-6 inches. A TV stand can require space varying between 6 inches and 10 inches.

• The Size of Table Stands vary with the style and make. Plan on a table or base with at least 12 inches in depth and a minimum width 6 inches longer than the bottom of the table stand.

• How much viewing space is available in the room? The comfortable viewing distance for smaller Big Screen TVs is 6 to 10 feet; the largest plasmas can be easily viewed from 6 to 20 feet away.

• Consider the space needed for all the accessories your Big Screen TV will require; a TV stand (or wall mount) , a home entertainment system with speakers, a digital cable box and an HD-DVD player.

• Last, but not least, how jealous will the neighbors be when they see your new 50-inch Plasma?

Only you can decide what size Flat Screen TV you want to purchase for your family. Do a little planning, make informed choices, and you’ll be much happier with your new Big Screen TV!

It’s as easy as 1 2 3!

Is too much of something a bad thing? Dentists say that too much sugar will rot the teeth. If a person eats a diet high in saturated fat, then they put themselves at risk of having a heart attack. But what about material possessions? Can a television ever be too big?

Flat screen TVs are definitely a material possession, especially when you consider how much they cost versus an older model television, but are they really worth having? It is more than just having a television that has a flat surface. It is about bigger, wider, and thinner and of course, and having a picture quality that is to be envied by all.

The problem in the past was that not all flat screen televisions were better than their round cousins. The flat screen monitor for the computer was very popular and gave a high density resolution. This was applied to big screen televisions.

There is a huge problem with those huge monstrosities. As the screen size was increased, color and resolution became distorted. Therefore, a person would have a giant picture, but the quality wasn’t as good as that of small 27″ televisions.

When people discuss flat screen TVs in today’s technologically advanced world, most are referring to a LCD or plasma television. With a plasma TV, the size of the screen does not matter, as far as the resolution is concerned.

The high concentration of pixels and corresponding programming in the television can offer up an incredibly clear and crisp picture. The 52″ has the same picture quality as the 40″ and sometimes comes equipped with motion software that makes on-screen movements very fluid.

As with anything being too much, sometimes the prices for these televisions can be more than the average consumer wishes to spend. Flat screen televisions are quite expensive when compared to their cathode-ray cousins. Consumers are going to pay for that technology. A 52″ HDTV plasma tv from Samsung runs close to $8,000.00 and that may be more than you want to spend on a boob tube.

Most people still find flat screen TVs a bit expensive and are hesitant to pay so much for a television. You have to remember that ten years ago, the price for a television set was not much more than what is being asked today.

A good quality and size LCD can be purchased at a major retailer for around $700.00. You may even be able to find a sale and purchase one at an even lower price.

Although it may seem brand new the technology behind flat screen TV has been around for a number of years. Now that there have been improvements in manufacturing technology they are now easier and cheaper to produce and therefore more readily available to the average consumer. The level of quality and affordability to which we now have access as consumers is causing us to raise the bar of our expectations for other technology in consumer electronics as well.

Of course now that we have this fantastic level of consumer technology in our televisions we need to maintain that level of quality in those components we use such as speakers and other necessities. The largeness of the screen and the superior colors and picture quality all contribute to the overall entertainment experience of simulating a large professional movie theater experience. With the improvements in technology and global production benefits the level of quality and affordability will only get better for the consumer.

The amazing colors and stunning picture quality can be attributed to the use of xenon and neon gasses within the set. These safe gasses inertly move between two flat panels of glass. This procedure allows for the display of 16000000 colors which is what provides such a superior picture.

The longevity of a flat screen TV can be measured in a qualitative manner based on the number of hours it can run until the quality of it’s picture degenerates to 50 this is called it’s “half life”. The standard half life is about 60 000 hours. An excellent warranty that includes free or low-cost service will contribute to full enjoyment of every hour.

You’ll find that the standard flat screen TV is about 4 to 5 inches deep and is thinner than your normal television. The thinness of the device allows a great deal of flexibility in determining where to install it. Mounting it on the wall becomes an option that you didn’t have with your previous TVs.

The flat screen TV is a delicate piece of equipment and this needs to be taken into consideration when moving and placing it. Even small bumps can cause unexpected problems in screen quality and if a repair is possible it can be quite expensive. Parents should consider installing one so that it is high enough to avoid flying toys and rough housing children. You can use wall mounts so that you can tilt it down for a comfortable view.

Now that they are more obtainable you see that there are also special cabinets and furniture as well that will go along with your purchase. No matter your eccentricities you are bound to find a match to your flat screen TV accessory requirements. You will find that you can protect your flat screen TV in a sturdy cabinet that is also quite stylish as well.

When considering how much to spend when you buy a flat screen TV make sure to not only consider the actual television itself but also a warranty furniture like cabinets and accessories as well as any delivery costs. Today’s larger versions use a lot of electricity however this technology is constantly evolving and in the near future the consumer will have access to more energy efficient models that will be less expensive to everyone.

At the time when flat screen televisions were initially introduced the technology that they were primarily based on were LCD and were made available in sizes that were smaller which were to be used in some television sets as well as in monitors for computers. These types of liquid crystal displays were ideal for laptop computers and the smaller sizes were ideal for other types of devices such handheld devices. Along with the launching of the flat screen plasma TV screen back in 1999, the television captivated world was sent into a mesmerizing shock.

Before the debut of the flat screen plasma TV the bigger sized screens were dominated by rear projection which also unfortunately had a limited viewing angle to them. The only way that a viewer could get a clear, sharp image he/she had to sit right directly in front of the unit. The majority of them were very big and bulky, some of them as many as four feet deep. Because of the limited viewing angle, they weren’t valued by the majority of people due to the fact that they could not see the picture clearly.

With the arrival of the flat screen plasma TV and viewing angles in the range of 170 degrees, these bigger screens can be viewed by a much bigger audience while still being able to see a full clear picture. With the vast majority of the predated tapered versions of television screens, the picture frequently lost a good portion of it’s detail close to the edges. With the newer flat screen plasma TV monitors, there isn’t any loss of detail on the sides or towards the top and the bottom so the viewers can experience the full affect of the image being shown.

Size Matters In Terms of Diagonal Measurements

Back in the 1950′s when televisions first made their introduction, the measurement back then of the screen frequently escaped most peoples logic. What the industry did was set the standard practice of taking the measurements on a diagonal manner. A 22-inch television was figured by taking a measurement from one edge of the screen to the other edge of the screen to arrive at the 22-inch mark.

When the measurement is taken at either a vertical or horizontal, the size was substantially less. Similar methods are utilized on today’s flat screen plasma TV, however the majority of individuals have more interest in what is known as the aspect ratio of the image as well as the resolution that is presented.

The greatest difference in flat screen plasma TV’s nowadays is the total size of the television. In terms of the older models, what is known as the cathode ray tube frequently was encapsulated within the case with as high as two inches on the sides. Even in a case like a 21 inch screen having measurements of roughly 16 inches wide, the case might still need as high as 22 inches or even more. A flat screen plasma TV monitor will typically be just an inch or so bigger than the total width of the screen and a lot more space is conserved because of the thickness of roughly four inches.

The flat screen TV has become the “must have” piece of electronic equipment that most people want to have in their homes. Who can blame them? The flat screen television has replaced the bulkier televisions of the past. They come in a variety of sizes and some can be mounted directly on your wall.

Their lighter size allows people to free up space. Watching the game on a big screen television used to be the “cool” thing to do, but now you can get the same size with better color. The flat screen has come a long way and has affected more than just the television industry.

You have probably noticed that flat screen monitors have been around for quite some time. The laptop would not have been a viable and streamlined monitor had it not been flat. Flat screen monitor’s first run of production were still quite heavy, but instead of a rounded screen, a flat screen was inserted. From there it became the goal of designers and engineers to have a monitor that was not as heavy, nor as bulky.

The year of 1964 was a huge year of discovery for the flat screen TV. Plasma technology was discovered thanks to a growing need by scientists to have a computer screen that did not have to constantly refresh itself.

The plasma offered a better screen resolution and provided a huge difference from having to use a regular television set as a computer monitor. LCD and plasma TV’s came out of this revolution in technology. It did not happen immediately, but it was a starting point from which scientists began to work.

Television has come so far from its humble beginnings. It was a novelty to possess something that could transmit a program from the other side of the country. Sure the image was grainy and in black and white, but it was still an item that only the wealthy possessed.

Eventually it became more affordable. The television evolved into color and bigger screen sizes. Then it became much larger; as tall as the average woman. Too bad the image was distorted and lost its vibrant colors. LCD and plasma solved those dilemmas by changing from a cathode-ray to the use of plasma.

People everywhere are jumping into the flat screen TV craze. Even the price does not seem to be intimidating to most buyers when they compare the differences between their older models and the new fantastic versions.

As more manufacturers discover new technology, the prices will fall. The 30 inch flat screen plasma or LCD can be purchased for around $800 and in some sales, they go for as little as $600.

Are you ready to buy your very first LCD flat screen TV? LCD flat screen TVs are becoming more and more popular and they have recently had dramatic price drops. If you are in the market for a new flat screen TV, then you have many choices before you.

The plasma screen was one of the most exciting consumer electronics products to hit the market in the last 10 years. Now however, the LCD flat screen TV’s are catching on for many reasons. Plasma screens tend to use more electricity, and are heavier which makes wall mounting more difficult. Another drawback with plasma is that the screens are a bit ‘softer’ and are more easily scratched. When Plasma flat screen TV’s were first produced, their life expectancy was around 20,000 hours but now with the newer generations of plasma screens, their life span is closer to 50-60,000 hours.

Advantages of a LCD flat screen TV is that it is not susceptible to burn-in and usually is less expensive than plasma televisions. Because of the nature of LCD technology, there is no radiation emitted from the screen itself. It is also lighter weight than the plasma counterpart and thus easier to hang.

Plasma screens, in general, handle faster moving images better than LCD’s. Plasma and LCD screens may look similar, but that is really where their similarities end. Some LCD do not have the level of color accuracy as plasma displays. Historically plasma screens had better viewing angles than LCD. You would tend to see color variations with side viewing of the LCD’s, while the Plasma screen colors remained more solid.

Prices vary from company to company, so it is smart to shop around. There are many makes, models, sizes and prices associated with the LCD flat display. The prices of the TVs will vary, depending on the size, manufacturer, model and merchant. The name brands are going to be substantially more expensive than the non name brands.

Once you get that LCD flat screen TV up on your wall, you will surely have no buyer’s remorse. They are totally cool and in no time your entire family will be enjoying movies and games in crisp, vivid, full HD splendor on your LCD flat screen TV and have forgotten they ever had another kind.

Every day, more and more bad news hits the media about global warming, climate change and pollution. Every day new products are developed and every day more chemicals are added to the list of pollutants to our atmosphere and water.

One of the latest chemicals to draw the attention of the scientists is nitrogen trifluoride (NF3), a chemical is used in the production liquid crystal displays (LCD), also called flat-panel displays, along with thin-film solar cells and microcircuits. The most popular use of LCD displays is for televisions and computer monitors.

NASA is reporting that the level of this gas in our atmosphere is much greater than previously thought. As the manufacture and disposal of these LCD screens increase, so will the emissions of nitrogen trifluoride into our atmosphere.

According to reports, nitrogen trifluoride (NF3), remains in the atmosphere for up to 740 years and is only second to Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) in its global warming potential. This chemical has a greater greenhouse impact than even that of the world’s largest coal-fired plants. Its “globe-warming effect reportedly could be 17,000 times more potent than a similar mass of carbon dioxide”. [NASA]

Nitrogen trifluoride is missing from the list of greenhouse gasses addressed in the Koyoto Protocol and little to nothing has been heard about this chemical. Why is this extremely toxic chemical called the “missing greenhouse gas” from the Koyoto Protocol and what is the Koyoto Protocol?

In 1992, a United Nations Conference on Climate Change formulated the Kyoto Protocol. This protocol set the standards for reduction of six greenhouse gasses (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, sulfur hexafluoride (hydrofluorocarbons and perfluorocarbons)that are known to interfere with the climate system.

In 1992, few liquid crystal display LCD’s were being manufactured, so the gas was not considered a major problem at the time, but that is rapidly changing.

In 2008 alone, the production of this chemical would release the equivalent of the global-warming emissions from a country the size of Austria and production could double in 2009.

In February of 2009, the television industry in the United States is making a full transition to digital technology. With that will be an increase in the demand for LCD flat screen televisions.

Manufacturers are promoting LCD televisions as “eco-friendly” as a benefit to switching from analog television to digital television. In comparison, they do use less electricity than plasma TV’s, older rear projection, and analog TV”s.

What isn’t taken into consideration is that many Americans, keeping true to their “bigger is better” mentality, will purchase larger replacement televisions which will use even more electricity than their old televisions.

The discarding of millions of the old analog televisions will be another ecological nightmare. Televisions, along with all electronics, contain toxic chemicals. Improper recycling will only add to the ecological harm our garbage is causing to the planet.

To truly go green when you purchase a new television,

• Don’t opt for the largest screen you can buy.
• Recycle your old television through a reputable recycler.
• Turn your television off when it is not being watched.
• Spend less time in front of the television.
• Spend more time outdoors where the air is probably cleaner.
